Shepherdess, there on the hill,
My fondest hope you would fulfill;
To make a truth of my surmise,
And friendship, thereupon, my prize.
Sir, you have found me at my task;
To wait till mid-day, I would ask.
My lunch kit here has food for two,
To share with one whose words speak true
.
It was only the dawn of a smile,
But the memory will last the long while;
For her smile was conveying to me
That my wish could become a may be.
This surely my good fortune day,
By some kind act of destiny;
I turned about to look her way,
Her sheep dog wagged his tail for me.
