So there I stood, with garden hose in hand,
To give the garden greenery its due;
And then, a subtle humming in my ear,
And moments later, she came into view.
Her wings the blur of energy unleashed,
Impossible from such a tiny frame;
Her curiosity the thing to see,
In her proximity she showed as tame.
And then, at once, she hit upon the spray,
And bounced again, and once more, in delight;
And then she hovered, waving her farewell,
And, at the speed of sound, escaped my sight.
And so, as often as I go outside,
To give attention to what flowers there,
A similar inspection is my hope,
The gaze on me from someone in midair.
